Choosing a New Colour Scheme for a Room

Redecorating a room will give it a new lease of life. Colours and styles often don’t age well, and a fresh lick of paint will make all the difference. It’s imperative that you choose a colour scheme that is going to work for you and the rest of your home.

Think about the room as a whole. Don’t just consider wall colour, or furniture, or flooring – think of them as one complete unit. Everything in that room should be complementary, so get plenty of samples and see how they will look together. If you go into a store you may also be able to use CAD technology to give you a more life-like representation of a room, which is very useful if you’re making any dramatic changes.

Make rooms feel light, bright and airy. There’s nothing wrong with bold colours or darker shades, but use them in moderation. For example, you might want to incorporate a feature wall, or you might want to use a rug to add a splash of colour to otherwise neutral flooring.

Consider how to make a room stand the test of time. Redecorating is expensive so you don’t want to choose a colour that will be out of fashion within a few months. Staying neutral will help. Go for a more minimalistic look and add to it over time rather than inundating your room with knick-knacks straight away. Use wallpaper sparingly, maybe just for a feature wall – paint will look more fresh and will look less old-fashioned a few years down the line.
