The kitchen has to be an adaptable part of the home. When homes get more modern, so too do kitchens. Modern kitchens in London are growing in popularity with the spaces that are available, both in flats and houses. London is a modern city, for modern living, and a modern kitchen is a big part of this. It’s a room where people tend to spend a lot of their time, and for this reason, it’s important to make sure the kitchen aesthetic is one that you love. Modern can mean different things at different times, as fashions and styles change – but, in general, modern in terms of a kitchen will mean keeping up with the current trends and making sure they are upheld in this important part of the home.
Current trends dictate that kitchens should be minimalist spaces with clean lines and modern appliances, that are usually either integrated, or chosen specifically for their appearance. There are two very prominent trends currently: the trend for pared back, clean lines, and minimalist spaces, and the trend for bold colours and large blocks of colour. This might mean full height units, large appliance towers, and colours such as dark greens being used to create drama and beauty.
There are of course also modern living trends which will affect kitchens. The main trend in London at the moment is for open plan, flexible living with multi purpose spaces that have various functions. This has seen kitchens go through many transformations of late – they are no longer just a space for cooking, they are a space for cooking, eating, drinking, entertaining and family time. Islands are a prominent feature in today’s modern London kitchen, providing versatility with work space and cooking space, as well as a seating area. It is the perfect space for a family to gather together in the kitchen whilst cooking, or to eat together, or even to sit in this beautiful and stylish part of the home to chat, share a drink, or play a game. Living spaces that all blend into one are very much the fashion in today’s interior design.
In terms of kitchen decor and some of the most modern trends that are around, there is a real preference for handleless designs. This is very modern and yet has been around for some years now, showing no signs of becoming any less popular. These units will often have a high gloss finish and might be paired with shiny appliances like gas or ceramic hobs. The other trend for modern blocks of colours sees lots of full height units being used, with bold coloured frontals. These colours will also translate to the kitchen island, if one has been built in. Full height pull out larders might be used for storage, making use of these full height units but making the contents easily accessible as well. American fridge freezers are very popular and modern, utilised by many London residents; they can be freestanding or they might be built in with units above to give complete consistency of colour and design.
